Visual Therapy

Visual therapy is non-invasive treatment program that is used to improve, correct or re-stabilize an otherwise unstable visual system.

We as human beings have a body that is designed to sit, crawl, walk, run, with regard to the visual system, we should look 6 meters or further to relax the eyes. Modern technology and modern schooling has unfortunately brought about the need for us to look closer than 6 meters most of our waking hours, with a few exceptions of course. This leads (in some cases) to visual discomfort, which over time, leads to visual imbalance, which leads to the eyes not happily working together as a team - commonly termed as Binocular Instability.

The identification of this instability, or for that matter a squint (strabismus), lazy eye syndrome(amblyopia), visual memory abilities, visual perceptual abilities and visualization skills (most of these we do not realize the effect that they have on general behaviour and outlook to life) will be evaluated by the Optometrist using standardized testing criteria.

Treatment programs are directed at specific visual difficulties and instabilities, making use of exercises and certain implements such as spectacles, lenses, prisms and other appropriate equipment dependant on the nature and severity of the Binocular Instability.
